Course Enrollment Preferences Selection
My name is Amy Lancaster and I work in Academic Affairs in the Associate Dean’s office.
I will be your academic contact until your arrival in late August. Over the summer, you
will be able to rank your course preferences online for your fall semester schedule. The
standard freshman course load consists of the following: lab science (4 credit hours), humanities
(3 credit hours), one elective (2-3 credit hours), foreign language (3-5 credit hours), and
physical education (1 credit hour). Other opportunities include Military Science (1 credit hour)
and music performance courses (1 credit hour).
You may now log in to FYI to practice ranking your course preferences. We encourage you to visit the site often to practice in order to be
ready to submit your preferences when the site becomes live for official submission.
Actual course preference submission will begin on Monday, June 23, 2008 beginning at
8:30 AM (EDT). Preferences will be considered on a first come, first-served basis when
possible, so you are encouraged to submit your preferences as soon as you can.
First, you will
be asked to select a possible major. While this does not lock you into a program
of study, it is important that you
make an appropriate science selection if you
intend to pursue a degree in any science or pursue a pre-healthcare program of study.
You will then be directed to select your course preferences. The only course affected
by your major is the lab science option.
Lab Science
Students who elect
a
non-science major
(Bachelor of Arts program of study) will be required to complete one life science
(Biology 104 or Psychology 104) and one physical science (Chemistry 104 or Physics
104). Students who elect a
science major
will rank Biology 111 (Zoology), Chemistry 123 (General Chemistry), Physics 121 (General Physics), or Physics 141 (Physics for Science and Engineering), according to
interest and major.
Humanities
101 serves as a required introductory course and is offered by professors from various
disciplines within the Humanities. While each course is a unique creation of the
faculty, each section has a literary and writing emphasis. Students should read
descriptions of each section and rank their top five (5) choices. Note: some classes
are offered in multiple sections, so students are encouraged to rank both of these
preferences if interested in such a section.

Learning Communities: Freshman learning communities join a humanities class with
a course in the sciences. Often, both the humanities and the science professor will
participate in the lab component of the science course in an effort to integrate
both perspectives. Students who enroll in the Humanities part of a learning community
must also enroll in the science course, and vice versa. Note: These learning communities
are only open to those students taking science 104.
Each student will take one elective
course during the fall. While there are many options, History 101/102, Philosophy
120, Math 120/140/160/181, Art 202, Religion 201, Religion 280, and Music 201 will fulfill specific general education
requirements. Other courses will bear elective credit which is also part of the requirements for graduation.
Physical Education
Students are
required to take two 1 credit hour physical education courses. Every freshman will
enroll in PHED during the fall of the freshman year.
Other options
Other optional courses
include Military Science (2 credit hours), Men’s Glee Club, Wofford Singers, Women’s
Choir, Concert Band, and String Ensemble. All music performance courses carry 1
credit hour.
A note about Foreign Languages (3-5 credit hours):
Students will be placed in a foreign language based on their previous experience
in high school. Students with no foreign language or who have studied a language
not offered at Wofford College will be placed in a language 101 course of their
choice, provided there are spots available. Please see the chart below for placement
guidelines.
If you are interested in taking Chinese 101-102 to fulfill your
foreign language general education requirement, please contact Amy Lancaster after May 15, 2008 at
lancasterae@wofford.edu.
The Chinese 101-102 sequence is a 5 credit hour course/semester that meets daily
Monday through Friday 8:30-9:20am.

more about Chinese? Have a look at the program’s website and check out
